An optical fiber consists of two materials: a high refractive index core and a low refractive index cladding. Light launched into the core propagates by total internal reflection at the interface between the core and the cladding. Since the losses incurred at each total internal reflection are extremely small, light remains confined within the fiber and can propagate over large distances.

FiberTech Optica supplies multimode optical fibers for research and industrial applications. In a multimode fiber, the core diameter is much larger than the wavelength of light being propagated. This has two important effects: many wavelengths can be launched into the fiber simultaneously and; the light inside the fiber is scrambled, so that the output distribution is more or less uniform, regardless of the original input distribution.

Quality

There are several factors which affect the quality and durability of optical fibers:

• Purity of the materials used. Our fibers are produced from the finest preform materials available in both high and low OH^- silica. Both spectral transmission and purity of each preform are tested before production begins.
• Quality of the coating materials. Coatings are critical in providing flexibility and mechanical resistance to the fragile fused silica fiber. We are constantly evaluating new materials and formulations for adhesion, uniformity, and long term stability to ensure that our fiber continues to perform even after years of use.
• Precise control of the manufacturing process. As they say - the devil is in the details, and it is the little things that we do that give us the edge and you the confidence that your fibers will perform consistently from batch to batch and spool to spool.
  At our ISO 9001 production facility, we control the temperature, drawing speed, coating deposition and many other parameters to ensure that the diameter stays constant, the surfaces of both the fiber and the coating are smooth and without defects, and the coating is cured properly and adheres well to the fiber.
• Product testing. ALL of our fibers are proof tested before delivery to ensure that they meet our stringent quality requirements. We also supply spectral attenuation data for all the bulk fiber deliveries.
