All-silica tapered optical fibers are often used as light concentrators for
high power laser applications. At the larger (input) end, a beam with a larger
diameter (and hence lower power density) can be coupled into the taper. At
the output end, the beam has a smaller cross-section, and hence higher power
density. In addition, the output beam is homogenized by the taper.
Of course, there is a price to pay for this - the output beam has higher numerical aperture than the original beam, and hence is more difficult to control optically.
Depending on the desired input/output diameter ratio (2:1 to 5:1), these components are supplied as patchcords in standard lengths of 1 to 5 meters, terminated with standard connectors (SMA, FC/PC, ST), or ferrules.
